I also find it interesting how many people are so willing to listen to the things that already fit within their worldview or add weight to what they already believe, but then they get so defensive when something else is brought up. Discussions become arguments because people are not willing to listen to opposing sides, think for themselves then realize that it is ok if others think for themselves as well. Why does everyone have to think the same. Yes I believe there is Truth with a capital T, and that we should seek for it. But that Truth is a pattern and is based on princples and can lead to many different actions.

I appreciate your careful analysis and your faith--you seem to have a good blend of the two. I don't believe those are opposite ends of the spectrum.

I'm also constantly trying to find the truth about our local/national/world situations. I love NPR, and I try to read balanced amounts of news from the Times and the BBC. I can honestly say I have felt more clarity of thought the more I have done this--it seems the more I do it the better trained my brain becomes at weeding out sensationalized news.

My other standard is that if the news source covers the exploits of Britney Spears or Brad Pitt, I am distrustful of every conclusion they make. I'm terribly closed-minded that way.

So Chad, it has been almost a year since your last post. I was just wondering what your thoughts are about President Obama so far. From what he has done, is there greater or less cause for hope in the President?

If you're interested in my take on it, for giggles I did an analysis of "executive experience" and its ability to predict success as a president:

Good points. It's a little daunting and scary to think of the influences that can affect perception and how that shapes important items... such as presidential elections.
If I have to hear one more person tell me that their reason for voting for Obama is "because he's charismatic, motivational, change..." yada yada yada I'm going to become sick. Sweet! What has he actually accomplished that makes you want to vote for him? Records usually tell a whole lot of the story.
That's why I check out your blog, you study things out... not saying I always agree but I know I'll get a well studied and thought out answer. -
What are your thoughts on McCain? Obama has been so much in the spotlight seems like we know a lot more about him for good and bad.

Great post! The thing with Obama is that he doesn't fit neatly into pre-established categories. He is quite liberal when viewed through the lens of his stances on abortion, gay marriage, and the potential for government to play a substantial role in society. But he also has a pragmatic, pro-business side that responsible corporations can readily accept. He doesn't automatically favor more regulation and assume that environmentalists or labor groups are right and corporations are wrong in every instance. I think that's precisely what many of us like about the possibility of an Obama presidency - he sees things differently from the typical politicians and he comes at problems from unusual angles.
